John Clark (Richard Gere) is a lawyer successful in his job, with a charming wife and ideal family, who never feels that something is missing as he makes his way every day through the city.
Each evening on his way home, John sees a beautiful woman (Jennifer Lopez), staring with a lost expression through the window of a dance studio. Haunted by her gaze, John impulsively jumps off the train one night, and signs up for dance lessons, hoping to meet her. At first, it seems like a mistake, but as his dance lessons continue...

The first Shall We Dance movie was the last of the great Fred Astaire & Ginger Rogers musicals which features multiple varieties of dance, ballet and a memorable routine on roller skates.
