Pierre Dulaine (Antonio Banderas) is a ballroom dance teacher hired to teach ballroom dancing to the most troubled students. His classic methods clash, but after he dances tango in front of his students, who are dedicated to hip-hop, they all team up to create a new style of dance.

The movie is based on the true story of Pierre Dulaine, who worked on the choreography for this film.
The tango Pierre and Morgan (Antonio Banderas and Katya Virshilas) dance on in front of the students is called Asi Se Baila el Tango written by Emilio Haro, Veronica Verdier and Gabriel Barredo, and performed by Bailongo! featuring Vero Verdier.
Katya Virshilas is also in the movie Shall We Dance where she played a small role and was also the dance instructor of the cast.
